The Acaya hamlet takes its name from the last name of the military architect who built it (Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya) and made it the only fortified town in the southern part of Italy.
Its planimetry was very innovative, infact all the streets were intersected each other and formed a net and on its southernmost part there was the castle.
The defensive system of the hamlet became one of the most innovative in Europe.
The Leccese stone is a calcareous rock composed by the marine fossil sediments, that can be found only in the salentine area.
It is a stone that comes out very soft from the ground hardening through times, therefore it helped a lot the work of the local stone cutters who built so many work of arts with this stone giving birth to the baroque period in Lecce.
During the lab activities you can attend to the different stages of the work of the stone.
